Prophet’s Rock Pinot Gris 2020 Central Otago, New Zealand 75cl

Prophet’s Rock is a small, quality-obsessed producer in Central Otago, working only its own estate vineyards high in the Bendigo and Pisa hills on New Zealand’s South Island. The focus is deliberately narrow, on three aromatic varieties, riesling, pinot gris and pinot noir, and on a low-intervention, sustainable approach in the vineyard and cellar. Winemaker Paul Pujol trained partly in Alsace, and that influence runs right through the textural, food-friendly house style.

This is pure Pinot Gris, hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed, then fermented with wild yeast in older barrels rather than stainless steel. Fermentation runs slow, often over several months, and the wine is left on its gross lees without racking until bottling. It is a patient approach that trades showy, upfront fruit for depth, texture and a genuine sense of place.

Central Otago’s continental climate, with warm days and cold nights, lets Pinot Gris ripen slowly while holding on to its acidity. The 2020 carries that balance of ripeness and freshness that marks the region’s best aromatic whites, richer than a typical Italian style yet still clean and dry.

Expect aromas of ripe pear, baked apple and a touch of spice, then a broad, gently textured palate carried by the barrel and lees work. It finishes dry and fresh rather than sweet, which makes it an easy match for roast pork, roast poultry or soft, washed-rind cheeses.
