Ahrens Family Kasteel-Neef Grenache 2021 Voor-Paardeberg, Paarl, Western Cape, South Africa 75cl

The Ahrens Family was founded in 2008 by Albert and Heidi Ahrens, and Albert makes every wine at their small cellar just south of Paarl. His CV takes in the Rhone, Priorat and Champagne as well as years in the Swartland, and it shows in his taste for perfumed, savoury, moderate-alcohol wines. Above all he wants each bottle to carry a clear address, a fixed sense of where it grew.

Kasteel-Neef sits in his single-vineyard Terroir range and comes from the Voor-Paardeberg, a ward on paper part of Paarl but in feel much closer to the Swartland. If his Swartland red, Black, leans Northern Rhone, this is his Southern Rhone: Grenache-led, filled out with a generous slug of Carignan for freshness and grip and a little Syrah for structure. The fruit comes from older vines on decomposed granite and shale.

2021 is widely rated one of the Cape’s finest recent vintages. A cool, even growing season with no heat extremes let the grapes ripen slowly, building flavour and colour while holding onto natural acidity. For a Grenache-based red that prizes perfume and freshness, those conditions are ideal, and they have given this a wine with both charm and the balance to age gracefully.

Bright medium ruby. The nose is fragrant and lifted, with raspberry, red cherry and dried strawberry, wild herbs, dried rose and a dusting of white pepper. The palate is medium-bodied and silky, with sweet-edged red fruit, a savoury, earthy undertow and soft, powdery tannins. Fresh acidity keeps the finish long and bright. Serve at cool room temperature with roast lamb, herby stews or grilled vegetables, and enjoy over the next six years.

Albert himself frames Kasteel-Neef as his Southern Rhone wine, and that is a fair guide: think of a good Cotes du Rhone Villages or a lighter Gigondas, all perfume and drinkability rather than power. It suits a relaxed dinner or a Sunday roast, and it flatters a wide table. Quietly assured and easy to love, it shows just how graceful Cape Grenache can be.
