Malbec is a relative newcomer among Bellevue’s reds, and the estate treats it as a chance to show off its terroir rather than chase a big, inky international style. Grown on the granite soils of the Bottelary Hills, it comes out unmistakably South African, with a fynbos-scented character you will not find in Cahors or Mendoza.

This is 100 percent Malbec, part of the approachable Estate range and made for early, easy enjoyment. Rather than pile on oak and extraction, Kritzinger keeps the focus on the grape’s aromatics and the site’s herbal, mineral signature. The result is a fresher, more perfumed take on Malbec than many drinkers will expect.

Stellenbosch had a kind 2022, bucking the smaller national crop thanks to good winter rains and a largely cool, even season. Slower ripening helped the region keep bright flavour and fresh colour, ideal for an aromatic, medium-weight red like this, where perfume and freshness matter more than sheer power or high alcohol.

The nose is exotic and lifted, with fynbos, buchu and eucalyptus over black, sappy berries and chocolate-peppermint. The palate is medium-full and fresh, its dried-herb spice and minty brightness carried by supple tannins to a sleek, powdery, mineral-tinged finish. Serve at cool room temperature with grilled steak, lamb chops, burgers or a peppery boerewors.

Greg Sherwood MW scored the 2022 a solid 92 points, praising its exotic, terroir-driven character. If you enjoy a fresher, more savoury style of Malbec, or a herb-scented Cape red, this offers plenty of interest for the money.
