The Liberator is the label of Richard Kelley MW, a Master of Wine who has spent more than two decades in the Cape rescuing small, characterful parcels that might otherwise disappear into a larger blend. Every release carries a quirky name and a hand-drawn cartoon backstory, and ‘This is the Sea’ is his ode to Albariño, an Iberian grape still seldom seen in South Africa.

Albariño is prized in Galicia and northern Portugal for its salinity, its taut citrus fruit and its natural affinity with the ocean. This bottling was sourced through Renegade Wines from a parcel on the Cape South Coast, where cool sea air and a long, gentle ripening season keep the aromatics fresh and the acidity bright. A wine like this is Kelley showing a familiar grape in an unexpected home.

The 2021 vintage is widely regarded as a cooler, later Cape season that favoured freshness and balance in white wines. Those conditions suit an aromatic, acid-driven grape, giving the fruit time to build flavour without losing its zip.

In the glass it is pale and bright. Grapefruit, lime and green apple lead the nose, while the palate is all tension and a saline, wet-stone finish. At a gentle 11% alcohol it stays light and refreshing, more about drive and drinkability than weight or richness.

If you enjoy Muscadet, Picpoul de Pinet or a classic Galician Albariño, this is a natural and rewarding detour into South African white. Serve it well chilled as an aperitif, or alongside oysters, grilled prawns and simply cooked white fish on a warm evening.
