The Liberator Episode 31 ‘Rieslings to be Cheerful’ Riesling 2020 Elgin, Western Cape, South Africa 75cl

The Liberator is Richard Kelley MW’s ongoing wine saga, each episode a small parcel with a story and a comic-strip label. He spent seven years living and working in the Cape, and still uses those connections to bring home wines that would otherwise never reach the UK. His labels read more like comic strips than wine bottles, but the wines behind them are chosen with a Master of Wine’s eye.

Episode 31, punningly titled Rieslings to be Cheerful, is a cool-climate Riesling from Elgin, made with Boplaas. Elgin is one of the Cape’s coolest wine districts, its high, ocean-facing vineyards well suited to aromatic whites, and Riesling holds on to the bright acidity and delicacy that mark the variety at its best. Cool nights preserve its perfume while the long, slow ripening keeps the fruit precise.

The wine is from the 2020 vintage and a light 12.5% alcohol, which suits its off-dry style. As a Liberator episode it was a one-off bottling and will not be repeated.

Expect a zesty, aromatic Riesling with lime and green apple fruit lifted by a wet-stone minerality, the touch of sweetness neatly balanced by fresh acidity. It is lively and refreshing rather than rich or heavy. Few Cape whites offer this much aromatic lift.
