Bolney Wine Estate near Haywards Heath in West Sussex was founded in 1972 and is one of the oldest commercial vineyards in England. Bolney was a pioneer from the earliest days of the modern English wine industry, and remains a benchmark producer with a cabinet of awards for both its still and sparkling wines. Its wines are a fixture on English lists, and its cellar door is a popular Sussex visit.

Pinot Gris is one of Bolney’s signature still whites, and the estate has long championed the variety as part of its still-wine range. Well suited to the free-draining Sussex soils and cool maritime climate, this 2019 is made from 100% Pinot Gris grown on the estate and earned a silver medal for its poise and fruit.

The 2019 growing season was a solid year for English whites, with enough late-season warmth to ripen the fruit fully while the cool nights preserved freshness and aromatic lift. Sussex, on England’s warmer south coast, is among the more dependable places to ripen the variety.

Expect a medium-bodied, smooth white with succulent pear, bright citrus and a note of honeysuckle, all carried on a fruit-forward palate with beautifully balanced acidity.
