The Journey is Ridgeback’s flagship, the wine into which the northern Paarl estate pours its best barrels each year. Where the single varietals show individual grapes, this is the estate’s statement of what it can do when the parts are brought together, a Bordeaux style blend built with patience and a clear sense of place.

Cabernet Franc leads the blend at just under half, joined by Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Petit Verdot, each parcel fermented apart before assembly. That Cabernet Franc core gives the wine its lift and its savoury, almost herbal edge, while the supporting grapes add flesh and colour. It is the range’s most complete and age worthy red.

The 2020 vintage was a strong one for Paarl, a year the Cape remembers fondly. A windy flowering trimmed yields and concentrated the berries, and a moderate, even ripening period brought the fruit in with both ripeness and freshness intact. For a blend like this, built for structure and ageing, it was close to ideal.

Opulent mulberry and plum fill the nose, threaded with pepper spice and a distinctive note of Cape fynbos. The palate is supple and juicy, its tannins soft and well integrated, running to a long, mineral finish. Thirteen months in French oak sits quietly behind the fruit. Drink it now with braised lamb or game, or hold it for several years; it will only gain.

This is a serious Cape blend in the classic mould, and one to reach for when the occasion matters. If you enjoy a Left Bank Bordeaux or a structured Stellenbosch blend, the Journey belongs on your table. Versatile enough for a special dinner yet built to reward the cellar, it is a wine you can pour with real confidence.
