Domaine Roquemoliere works in Picpoul de Pinet, the seaside corner of the Languedoc that curls around the Thau lagoon, famous for its oyster beds and for the bright white wine that grows up alongside them.
This Reserve bottling is pure Picpoul Blanc, the local grape whose name means ‘lip-stinger’, a nod to its mouth-watering acidity. Grown close to the Mediterranean, it is made fresh and unoaked to keep all its crunch and lift, a wine built to be drunk young and cold.
The 2019 vintage in the Languedoc gave ripe, healthy fruit with good natural freshness, which suits a grape that lives or dies by its acidity and its zip.
Expect a pale, bright glass with lemon and lime fruit, a whisper of white flowers and that characteristic saline, almost sea-breeze edge, finishing clean and dry. Serve it thoroughly chilled.
It is hard to beat with the shellfish of its home coast, oysters, mussels and grilled fish, and makes a lively, good-value alternative to other crisp Mediterranean whites.
