Quinta do Crasto Douro White 2019 Douro, Portugal 75cl

Quinta do Crasto is one of the Douro’s most admired estates, perched high above the river with a history stretching back centuries. Best known for its powerful reds and Ports, it also makes precise, food-friendly whites that show the fresher side of this dramatic landscape.

This white is a blend of traditional Douro white grapes, Viosinho, Rabigato and Gouveio. Fermented in stainless steel and held briefly on its lees, it is deliberately unoaked, so the aromatics and natural freshness lead. The style is bright and mineral rather than rich or buttery.

At altitude in the Douro, cooler nights and schist and granite soils help white grapes keep acidity and definition, even in a warm region. The 2019 vintage produced whites with good freshness and expressive fruit, and a few years in bottle have added a little roundness.

On the nose there are aromas of citrus and orchard fruit with a floral lift and a hint of tropical fruit. The palate is balanced and gently textured, carried by fresh acidity and a distinct mineral, faintly saline thread that gives a clean, moreish finish.

If you enjoy characterful dry whites such as a good Albarino or a white from the Rhone, this Douro white is an easy one to love, and a reminder that the region makes far more than big reds and Port.
