Quinta do Crasto made its name for red wine and Port, but its whites have quietly become a highlight of the range, and this bottling comes from the estate’s vineyards in the Douro Superior, the valley’s hot, remote eastern zone near the Spanish border.

The wine is a blend of native Douro white varieties, the sort of Arinto, Viosinho and Gouveio family that gives structure and freshness rather than obvious tropical fruit. Height matters here. Planting at altitude on cool, stony sites lets the estate hold acidity even in a warm and remote region, and it is that tension that defines the wine.

The 2018 season was cooler and more classic than the run of hot vintages that came before it, which suits a white built for freshness and precision rather than weight. It is a year that plays to this style’s strengths.

Expect a bright, dry white with citrus and orchard stone fruit, a floral top note and a clear mineral spine. The texture is precise rather than heavy, and the finish is clean and stony, with more grip and length than many warm-country whites manage. Serve it well chilled but not frozen, so the detail comes through.

This is a food white first and foremost. Grilled fish, shellfish, roast chicken and creamy risottos all work beautifully.
