Boas Quintas Fonte do Ouro Tinto 2013 Dão, Portugal 75cl

Boas Quintas is a family winery in the heart of the Dão, one of Portugal’s oldest and most respected wine regions. The Fonte do Ouro range is its estate-grown line, drawing on the granite soils and cooler mountain climate that give Dão reds their trademark poise and freshness.

This red is a blend of indigenous varieties, led by Touriga Nacional and filled out with Alfrocheiro and Jaen. Touriga brings structure and dark, floral-edged fruit, Alfrocheiro adds ripe berry flesh, and Jaen lends softness and approachability. The wine spends around six months in French oak, enough to round the edges without masking the fruit.

The Dão sits at altitude on granite bedrock, and the resulting reds tend to balance ripeness with acidity and grip. This 2013 now has a good stretch of bottle age behind it, so the primary fruit will have mellowed towards a more savoury, tertiary character.

On the palate expect dark plum and berry fruit, a touch of spice and a firm but fine tannic frame. Bottle age brings notes of dried fruit and earth, with fresh acidity keeping the finish lively and food friendly.

If you like structured European reds with a genuine sense of place, the Dão is a rewarding hunting ground and sits comfortably alongside a good Douro or a cooler-climate Rhône red. Give it a little time in the glass, then serve it with roast lamb, grilled beef, game or a rich mushroom dish. It is a wine for the table and for cooler evenings rather than a casual pour.
