Newton Johnson is a family estate in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, celebrated for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grown in one of the coolest, most maritime pockets of the Cape. Southend is the entry point to their Chardonnay range, though there is nothing entry level about the site it comes from.

The wine is a single-vineyard bottling from the Southend vineyard, which lies in the shadow of the Babylonstoren Mountains and is farmed by the family’s neighbours, the Pringles. Cool, south-facing slopes and stony soils give the fruit its tension. Fermentation is with natural yeasts, and the wine matures half in stainless steel and half in barrel, with only a small share of new oak each year, so the emphasis stays on purity.

The 2021 vintage was kind to white wines in the Hemel-en-Aarde, a cool, even season that suited Chardonnay well, and this release is bright and finely balanced, with the freshness the site is known for and just enough substance to carry it.

Subtly oaked, it offers lemon curd, spring blossom and crisp apple, with a savoury, umami nuance underneath. The palate is elegant and taut, driven by tangy, citrus acidity and a long, mineral finish. There is real precision here rather than richness. It works beautifully with roast chicken, creamy pasta, grilled fish or a wedge of soft cheese.
