Natte Valleij is a historic Cape Dutch farm on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg, just outside Stellenbosch, where Alexander Milner makes site-specific, low-intervention wines. He is best known for old-vine Cinsault, and the Axle Chenin Blanc sits alongside those reds as a personal favourite, a white made with the same respect for old vineyards and gentle handling.

The fruit comes from dry-farmed bush vines planted in 1985 on the decomposed granite of Darling, close enough to the coast to feel the cool Atlantic air. These mature, ocean-facing vines give natural concentration and a saline thread that set the wine apart. It is fermented with wild yeast in seasoned barrels, so the oak builds texture and breadth rather than adding obvious flavour.

The 2024 is a fresh, precise release. The long, slow ripening of the cool Darling site brings ripe pear and citrus while keeping the wine light on its feet, and around nine months on the lees adds weight and a savoury edge without softening the line.

On the palate expect wild pear, herbal lemon and a gentle lees richness, all carried by crisp acidity and a flinty, mineral finish. It stays dry and taut from start to close. Enjoy it with grilled white fish, roast chicken or a mature hard cheese.
