Millton Riverpoint Viognier 2016 Matawhero, Gisborne, New Zealand 75cl

Millton is New Zealand’s biodynamic pioneer, the first estate in the country certified organic and then Demeter biodynamic, farming at Gisborne since the 1980s. The estate earned organic certification in 1989 and biodynamic Demeter status in 1990, a genuine pioneer of the approach. Its Riverpoint bottling comes from a vineyard on the old Waipaoa riverbed in the Matawhero part of the district, where fine silts and clays give a distinctive, mineral-tinged fruit.

Riverpoint was replanted to Viognier in 1997, among the first commercial plantings of this Rhone grape in New Zealand. This is pure Viognier, hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts in a mix of French oak barrels and stainless steel, a considered approach that keeps the grape’s exotic perfume in check.

The 2016 vintage in Gisborne suited aromatic whites, giving this wine ripeness without losing its fresh, saline lift. The maritime setting shows clearly in the wine’s cut and energy.

Expect the grape’s signature aromas of apricot, peach and honeysuckle, threaded with ginger and a subtle spice. The palate is rich and textured yet buoyed by a mineral, almost salty edge that speaks of the vineyard’s proximity to the coast. Ripe stone fruit and a gentle warmth carry a long, characterful finish, and the native-yeast, gently handled making leaves it feeling honest and unforced.
