Journey’s End is a family-owned estate founded by the Gabb family in 1995, set on the cool Schapenberg slopes above False Bay. It sits within the greater Stellenbosch region, close to Somerset West, where sea breezes and higher altitude give the site a genuinely maritime character. The estate has become known for Chardonnay as well as its commitment to solar power and Fairtrade certification.

V1 is the estate’s expressive Chardonnay, made to show both fruit and craft. Rather than a simple, unoaked style, it is fermented and matured with a thoughtful mix of French oak and concrete, building texture and complexity while keeping the fruit fresh. That extra work gives V1 more weight and interest than an everyday Cape Chardonnay.

The 2018 vintage came during a run of dry Cape years, conditions that tend to concentrate flavour and give whites real focus and depth. For a Chardonnay of this style, that concentration adds welcome depth without tipping into heaviness.

In the glass, expect bright citrus and orchard fruit, lemon, lime leaf and yellow apple, wrapped in a soft, creamy mouthfeel from time on the lees. Good acidity keeps everything lively, and there is a saline lift on the finish that speaks of the estate’s seaside setting, leading to a flinty, mineral and persistent close.

This is a food-friendly Chardonnay with real personality. Serve it with roast chicken, seafood, poultry or creamy pasta, or enjoy it on its own well chilled. A few years in bottle have only added to its complexity.
