Hutton Ridge is made by Riebeek Cellars, the long-standing co-operative producer at the heart of the Swartland, the warm, rugged wine district north of Cape Town. Now trading as Riebeek Valley Wine Co, it has built a name for honest, affordable wines that punch above their price, and Chenin Blanc is one of its most dependable calling cards.

Chenin Blanc is South Africa’s signature white grape and the Swartland is one of its heartlands. Wines like this are usually made from free-run juice and fermented cool to keep the fruit bright, then rested briefly on the lees to add a little roundness and depth. The result is a white built for freshness and easy drinking rather than power.

By now the 2019 has a few years in bottle, which tends to soften Chenin’s edges and bring a touch more richness to the fruit. It remains an unpretentious, drink-now style rather than something built for the cellar.

Expect a fresh, fruit-driven glass of pear and white peach lifted by riper tropical notes such as guava and gooseberry. There is a saline, savoury hint underneath that keeps it from feeling simply sweet, a Swartland signature. The palate is uncomplicated and juicy, with balanced, easy acidity and a clean finish.

This is a wine for pouring generously rather than studying. Serve it well chilled with grilled fish, salads, lighter chicken dishes or simply on its own on a warm day. At this price it is a reliable house white to keep in the fridge for casual meals and warm evenings.
