Eagles’ Nest sits on some of the steepest vineyard land in South Africa, climbing the Constantiaberg from roughly 100 to 400 metres above sea level. Once pine forest, these slopes were replanted block by block into a boutique Constantia estate that hand-harvests everything it grows, chasing quality over volume at every turn.

Viognier is the estate’s calling card, and this Reserve shows why. Fruit comes from a handful of small blocks planted across different aspects of the farm, each picked and handled separately before whole-bunch pressing and fermentation in French oak. The barrel work is deliberately restrained, building texture and breadth without smothering the grape’s natural florals and stone-fruit character.

The 2020 season was a quietly excellent one at the Cape. A cool, unhurried start led to long, even ripening through a dry, moderate summer, giving growers the luxury of picking on flavour rather than racing the heat. In Constantia’s maritime climate that translated into whites with ripeness, balance and the freshness Viognier so often lacks.

Expect a generous nose of ripe peach, apricot and dried honey, lifted by lime and a subtle flinty note. The palate is broad and softly waxy, yet kept upright by fine acidity and a savoury, mineral undertow. It finishes long and dry. Serve lightly chilled with roast chicken, pork or a mild, fragrant curry, and drink over the next few years.

Eagles’ Nest has become one of Constantia’s most reliably rewarded names, with its Viognier Reserve a regular in Tim Atkin’s South Africa report. If you know the plusher style of Condrieu but want more energy and less weight, this sits squarely in that conversation. A confident white for a considered dinner, and a fine introduction to what the Cape does with the grape.
