Doran Vineyards has hospitality in its bones. Founded by the Irish-born, London-based travel entrepreneur Edwin Doran in 2010, the Voor Paardeberg estate near Paarl welcomes visitors to its cellar door and manor house, and farms its vines alongside cattle, sheep and native fynbos. Edwin’s son Tom now carries the project forward.

Honor D is the estate’s classic Bordeaux blend, three-quarters Cabernet Sauvignon to one-quarter Merlot. The Cabernet gives structure and blackcurrant depth, while the Merlot softens the edges with plush red fruit. It is made in a rounder, more supple style than a traditional claret, aiming for easy drinking now rather than years in the dark. A reliable everyday red with a smart streak.

The 2024 vintage brought a cold, wet Cape winter followed by a warm, dry, breezy summer, and a smaller crop overall. The Paardeberg fared well, with timely rain and no extreme heat, and its Bordeaux varieties ripened fully while holding their freshness. The season’s watchword was power balanced by poise, and that shows in the wine’s ripe yet lively fruit.

On the nose there are ripe black fruits and plum, red berries and a moreish note of milk chocolate and soft spice. The palate follows suit, medium to full-bodied, with round, soft tannins and a dry, tidy finish. Pour it with roast beef, lamb, a hearty stew or mature cheddar. Enjoyable now, it will hold comfortably for another three to four years.

Honor D is the sort of dependable Cape claret that quietly earns repeat orders, offering the shape and flavour of a good Bordeaux blend at a friendly price. It sits happily between a special-occasion bottle and a midweek pour, at ease with a Sunday roast or a relaxed dinner with friends. Straightforward, satisfying and easy to reach for again.
