In the Voor Paardeberg, where vineyards give way to wild fynbos and grazing livestock, Doran Vineyards makes its home. The estate was the idea of Irish-born Edwin Doran, brought to life with South African wine man André Badenhorst, and today it is run by Edwin’s son Tom with a team steering the farm in a more natural, regenerative direction.

Arya is a field blend, grown and picked together from old bush vines. Chenin Blanc leads at around seventy percent, with Grenache Blanc and Roussanne filling out the rest. Fermented and raised in stainless steel to keep the fruit pure and the mood fresh, it is designed as an unfussy everyday white with a little more to say than most.

The 2025 vintage is one South African growers are especially proud of. Cool, dry conditions and healthy soils, replenished by earlier rains, let the grapes ripen slowly and hold onto their acidity. For whites in particular it was a standout year, and that natural freshness runs right through this glass.

Pour it and you get pear and white peach on the nose, with citrus and a hint of lychee behind. The palate is textured and rounded, fuller than straight Chenin thanks to its blending partners, yet finishing crisp and clean. Serve well chilled as an aperitif, or alongside grilled fish, roast chicken or a fresh green salad. Best enjoyed young and fresh.

Jamie Goode of Wineanorak gave the 2025 a solid 89 points, noting its textured palate of pear and citrus. It offers the sort of easy, food-friendly appeal you would look for in a good Loire Chenin or a Cape white blend, without asking much of your wallet. A dependable choice for relaxed lunches and weekend gatherings.
