Domaine Oriel sits in the Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence, in the sun-warmed country between the Rhône and the Mediterranean where pale, dry rosé is very much the local calling card.
This is a classic Provençal rosé in that gentle, thirst-quenching mould. In the Coteaux d’Aix tradition, rosé is drawn from grapes such as Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah, pressed pale and made fresh to capture the region’s signature delicacy rather than any great weight.
The 2016 is now an older vintage for a style built for early drinking, so expect a wine that has softened and mellowed from its first bright youth, with any primary fruit likely joined by gentler, more evolved notes.
On the palate look for pale-pink colour, delicate red berry and citrus, and a dry, easy finish. Serve it well chilled as an apéritif or alongside grilled vegetables, salads and Mediterranean fish.
For lovers of pale, dry Provence rosé, this is an unpretentious glass in the regional style.
