Cramele Halewood is a long-standing Romanian producer, and its limited-edition wines showcase individual sites and styles. Theia comes from Transylvania, a cooler, higher part of the country that is fast gaining a reputation for fresh, characterful whites, and the name nods to a figure from Greek mythology.

Theia is a pure Chardonnay, barrel-fermented to build texture and depth. Fruit from the Sebeș Alba area in Transylvania brings natural freshness thanks to the cool nights and altitude, while fermentation and ageing in oak barrels add a creamy, savoury dimension. The aim is a fuller, more serious style of Chardonnay that still keeps its cool-climate acidity in balance.

The 2016 vintage suits this approach well, giving ripe but not heavy fruit and the structure to carry the oak without ever tipping into excess, a year that favoured poise over power.

Expect a nose of baked apple, ripe pear and citrus, layered with vanilla, toasted brioche and a hint of spice from the barrel. The palate is rounded and textured, with a gentle creaminess and a fresh, well-defined finish. Serve it at cellar temperature rather than fridge-cold. It pairs happily with roast chicken, creamy pasta, richer fish dishes or soft cheeses.
