Chateau Musar, founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar and shaped for decades by his son Serge, is the name that put Lebanese wine on the world map. The estate lies in the Bekaa Valley, with its white-grape vineyards planted at high altitude to the north, where cool air keeps the fruit fresh through a long ripening season.
The white is one of the most distinctive wines you can find. It is made from Obaideh and Merwah, two ancient indigenous grapes thought to be among the oldest cultivated in the region. Very few producers work with them, which gives this wine a character that is entirely its own.
The 2017 pours a pale lemon, with a nose of apple, fresh hay and grapefruit that opens into sweeter notes of basil and peach with time in the glass.
There is real texture and a savoury depth on the palate, the sort of white that feels closer to a fine aged wine than a simple fruity pour. It takes air well and unfolds slowly, and good examples can develop in bottle for many years.
Serve it with roast chicken, richer fish, creamy cheeses or spiced Middle Eastern dishes. It is a wine for the curious drinker, and one that reliably surprises anyone tasting it for the first time.
