Quinta do Casal Branco lies at Almeirim, on the southern bank of the Tejo river, and has been in the same family for more than two hundred years. The name Falcoaria, meaning falconry, recalls the royal falconry grounds that once occupied these lands, when the family served as caretakers for the Portuguese crown.

The Clássico is the estate’s more ambitious red, built on native Castelão and Touriga Nacional alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Alicante Bouschet. Part of the fruit is fermented port-style in open lagares and foot-trodden, before the wine spends around a year in French oak. The result is a deliberately full-bodied, structured style.

The Tejo, warmer and more generous than Portugal’s mountain regions, gives ripe, ample fruit, and the range of grapes adds layers from savoury native character to firmer international structure. This 2013 now carries a decade in bottle, softening the youthful power into something more resolved.

On the palate it is broad and dark-fruited, with blackberry and plum, a note of tobacco and spice, and firm but maturing tannins. Bottle age brings dried fruit and earthy complexity, and the finish is long and warming.

This is a red for the table rather than the aperitif hour, and a good showcase for the rising quality of the Tejo, a region that has quietly become one of Portugal’s most reliable sources of value. Give it half an hour in the glass to let the oak and fruit knit together, then serve it with grilled lamb, hearty beef, sausages or a rich winter stew.
