Bogle Vineyards is a sixth-generation family farming business rooted in Clarksburg, on the cool, river-fed land of California’s Sacramento Delta. Growing much of their own fruit gives the family a consistency that runs right through the range, and their whites tend to be as dependable as their bolder reds.

This Chardonnay comes from that home patch, where breezes off the Delta waterways temper the Californian heat. The result is a grape that ripens fully but keeps a thread of freshness beneath its richer, riper character, which is what stops the wine from feeling heavy.

The 2019 season was kind to California’s white grapes, and the fruit here is ripe and expressive. Time in barrel has added texture and a gentle wash of oak without burying the fruit, and the wine is drinking generously now rather than needing any patience.

In the glass it is generous and golden-toned, with tropical fruit, baked apple and citrus meeting butterscotch, vanilla and a hint of toast. The palate is rounded and creamy, finishing warm and comforting at 14.5%. It is an unapologetically approachable style, made to be enjoyed rather than analysed.

This is a crowd-pleasing white built for sharing. Serve it with roast chicken, creamy pasta, grilled corn, mild cheeses or a plate of buttery fish, and give it a good chill first.
