El Porvenir de Cafayate is run by the Romero Marcuzzi family in Salta’s Calchaqui Valley, a remote, sun-drenched corner of northern Argentina. Farming vines at extreme altitude is demanding work, but it gives the fruit unusual intensity and a natural freshness that shapes every wine here.

Laborum is the estate’s single-vineyard range, and this Malbec comes entirely from the Finca Rio Seco site, planted with mature vines at roughly 1,700 metres. Picking from one identified vineyard lets the wine speak of a particular slope and soil, a genuine mark of quality in a country where broad blends are common.

The 2022 was hand picked and aged in a mix of French and American oak barrels, giving cedar, vanilla and a little sweet spice around a ripe core of fruit. The elevation keeps acidity firm, so the wine stays lively rather than heavy, and the mature vines lend concentration without weight.

Expect a deep, dark colour and a nose of black plum, blackberry and mocha, with tobacco and gentle oak spice behind. The palate is full-bodied and smooth, the tannins ripe and the finish long. This is a wine for the table, matched with barbecued red meat, braised beef or a mature hard cheese.
