Pinotage was born at Bellevue: the estate produced the world’s first commercial bottling of the variety, and its old Pinotage vineyards remain the heart of the farm. That heritage gives the estate an unusual authority with the grape, from easy Estate reds right up to the powerful, oak-aged Reserve and Heritage cuvees.

The Reserve Pinotage is a serious, structured expression, made to reward cellaring. Kritzinger matures it for around two years in French oak, split evenly between new and second-fill barrels, which frames the dark fruit with vanilla and spice without smothering it. It sits between the everyday Estate Pinotage and the rare, single-vineyard Heritage bottling.

The 2021 vintage is regarded as one of South Africa’s finest in years. A cool, even season with a later-than-usual harvest let the grapes ripen slowly, building concentration while holding on to freshness. For a big grape like Pinotage, that balance is gold, giving depth and power without heaviness, and the structure to age gracefully.

The nose is deep and brooding, with creme de cassis, damson plum and mulberry over tilled earth, vanilla pod and Christmas spice, plus a dark-chocolate and roasted-coffee richness. The palate is full-bodied and dense yet harmonious, its firm tannins and concentrated black fruit balanced by fresh acidity. Decant when young. Superb with venison, oxtail or a rich beef stew.
