Chenin Blanc is South Africa’s signature white, and at Bellevue it comes from old bush vines rather than young, high-yielding plantings. That is typical of an estate whose average vine age is among the highest in Stellenbosch, and it lends even the everyday Estate wines a depth that belies their friendly price and easy manner.

The grapes grow in weathered granite topsoil over crumbly clay on a southern slope, hand-picked in mid-February. Rather than reach for the barrel, Kritzinger keeps this one fresh and unoaked: the juice settles overnight in stainless steel before a cool, tank fermentation with selected yeast, protecting pure fruit and a crisp, dry-leaning line.

The 2025 season earned warm reviews across the Cape, its long and even ripening giving white grapes concentration without sacrificing acidity. For a fresh, tank-fermented Chenin like this, that translates into ripe, expressive fruit held in check by lively natural acidity, the balance that makes the style so drinkable.

The nose leads with ripe pineapple and stone fruit over a clean, mineral undertone. The palate is fresh and nicely weighted, striking a balance between gentle, perceived sweetness and racy acidity before a crisp finish. Serve well chilled as an aperitif, or with grilled prawns, summer salads, sushi or lightly spiced Asian dishes. Drink over the next two to three years.

This is the kind of well-made, unpretentious Chenin that South Africa does better than almost anyone. If you usually buy Pinot Grigio or an unoaked Chardonnay for easy drinking, it offers more character for similar money. Keep a few in the fridge through summer; it rarely lasts long once the sun is out.
