Allesverloren Touriga Nacional 2016 Swartland, Western Cape, South Africa 75cl

Allesverloren has farmed the sun-baked Riebeek Valley in the Swartland for generations, and the Malan family’s deep roots in Portuguese varieties set the estate apart. Touriga Nacional, the aromatic backbone of great port, is one of its signature grapes, and few places in the Cape have as much history with it.

Made as a single variety, this Touriga shows why the grape is so prized: colour, perfume and structure in equal measure. In the Swartland’s warmth it ripens fully, giving a bold but composed dry red that keeps the variety’s floral, violet-tinged character rather than tipping into heaviness. It is a serious wine, but an inviting one.

The 2016 season was warm and dry across the Swartland, concentrating flavour in the fruit. Now with several years behind it, the wine has grown more velvety and integrated, the firm young structure easing into something smoother and more harmonious.

Full-bodied and richly textured, it carries blackcurrant and dark plum, tobacco and a twist of spice, with a fragrant floral lift on top. The tannins are ripe and fine, and the finish is long and savoury. Decanting an hour ahead helps it show at its best.

A wine built for hearty food, it suits roast lamb, venison and slow-cooked beef, and stands up happily to bold, spiced dishes.
