Albert Ahrens is the winemaker, viticulturist and driving force behind The Ahrens Family, which he and Heidi founded in 2008. He is known for chasing down old vines across the Cape and turning them into wines with a strong sense of origin, made with a deliberately light touch. Nothing is overworked, and oak plays a supporting role rather than a starring one. Each wine, he insists, needs its own address.
Granite-Roots belongs to his single-vineyard Terroir range and comes from a bush-vine Chenin block planted in 1984, tucked into the Aprilskloof on the northern side of the Paardeberg in the Swartland. The key here is the soil: decomposed granite, which tends to give lighter, more perfumed and elegant wines, a counterpoint to the concentration and depth of the wider Swartland. Ahrens leans into that, letting finesse lead.
2023 was a gift for Swartland whites. A dry, warm winter gave way to a cool, slightly wetter ripening period with none of the heat spikes that can coarsen warm-region fruit. On a granite site already inclined towards elegance, that cool finish sharpened the wine’s freshness and lift. Ahrens picks in stages at different ripeness levels and blends for balance, and the even season made that job easier.
Bright pale gold with a green glint. The nose is fragrant and floral, with pear, green apple, citrus blossom, white flowers and a cool, chalky minerality. The palate is medium-bodied and elegant, its orchard and citrus fruit carried on a fine, tensile line of acidity, with a subtle savoury depth and gentle barrel texture. The finish is long, dry and stony. Lovely with roast fish, poultry or fresh goat’s cheese, and worth cellaring five years.
Granite-Roots and its stablemates are regulars in South Africa’s Platter’s guide, and this is the graceful, aromatic face of Ahrens’s old vine Chenin. In feel it leans towards the leaner, more mineral end of fine Chenin, closer to a taut white Burgundy or a good Vouvray sec than to anything rich or heavy. A refined choice for a special meal, and a wine that quietly rewards attention.
