The Ahrens Family is the one-man mission of Albert Ahrens, who founded the label with his wife Heidi in 2008. Working from a small cellar near Paarl, he drives tens of thousands of kilometres each year to track down old vines and characterful sites across the Cape, then makes each wine with as light a touch as possible. His guiding line is simple: a wine needs an address.

Bendewijn is his side project and playground. The name plays on the Afrikaans and Dutch for a gang of friends bound by wine, and that is exactly what it is, a wine following rather than a formal club. Members put their name down and receive a carefully chosen six-bottle case a couple of times a year, drawn from across his Terroir and Regional ranges with no fixed recipe.

Because the case changes with what is ready, the mix varies from release to release. It might lean on his old vine Chenin Blancs from Swartland, Paarl and Wellington, take in a Rhone-style red such as Black or Kasteel-Neef, or slip in something more experimental. Recent Cape vintages, the cool and elegant 2023 whites among them, have given him plenty of good material to draw on.

As a set, the wines share a house style: honest, food-friendly and true to where they grew, with moderate alcohol and a savoury, mineral streak rather than heavy oak or obvious fruit. Whites are best lightly chilled, reds at cool room temperature. Between them they cover everything from a weeknight supper to a long lunch with friends, and several will happily age a few years.

This is one of the more personal ways to get to know Ahrens. Rather than buying a single label, you follow the winemaker’s own choices and see how his sites and seasons compare side by side. It makes an excellent gift for a curious drinker, and a genuinely enjoyable way to spend a few evenings exploring one of the Cape’s most thoughtful small producers.
