Florence is Aaldering’s more relaxed, everyday range, its name drawn from the Latin for blossoming and prosperity. Where the Estate wines aim for cellar-worthy seriousness, Florence is about approachable, ready-to-enjoy drinking. The Barrel Selection is its clever red, a blend the winemaker put together from barrels across the cellar.

This limited edition brings together four noble varieties, roughly 64 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 29 percent Pinotage, 5 percent Merlot and a hint of Shiraz. The single-variety components were aged in 225-litre French oak for around 24 months before blending. It is a snapshot of the estate’s red styles in one glass, reflecting the wider Western Cape.

As a non-vintage wine, the Barrel Selection is blended for consistency rather than tied to a single season, drawing on mature barrels of different ages. That freedom lets the winemaker balance ripe fruit, oak and structure each time, so the wine tastes reliably the same, generous and rounded, from bottle to bottle.

Deep red with a garnet rim. Red berries and plums lead, supported by spice and chocolate overtones. The upfront fruit is balanced by linear tannins from the selected barrels, which add length and poise to the finish. It is drinking well now and will hold for four to five years. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees.

Think of it as a friendly, well-priced Cape red blend, generous and easy without being simple. It is versatile at the table, happy with Italian dishes, beef roasts, a braai of steak or lamb chops. This is the bottle to open midweek or when friends turn up unannounced.
